Enrichment Centre for Malaysia's National Zoo
Enrichment Centre for Malaysia's National Zoo

REACT supports organisations that are dedicated to improving animal welfare for endangered animals. This year, we are pleased to announce that we are fundraising for Zoo Negara, Malaysia's National Zoo in Kuala Lumpur, and Way Out Experiences Malaysia, a volunteer organisation, to build Malaysia's first ever Enrichment Centre.
The Enrichment Centre will be a new building consisting of a small office, a library/resource room, a large work area and a secured storeroom for materials and tools. Keepers and zoo volunteers will use the centre daily to create food enrichment and physical enrichment devices. It will also be open to members of the public for them to discover more about animal welfare and how enrichment is created to meet the individual needs of the different species.
For example, the keepers would normally dump meat for the big cats in a pile every day. However, with a bit of imagination, volunteers create a paper mache 'deer' which is filled with the meat and then placed into the exhibit. The tigers or lions then 'hunt' and 'kill' the paper mache deer, tearing it apart and getting to the meat inside. A much more active and fun way for the animals to obtain their daily nutrition!
Zoo Negara has agreed to pay for half of the Enrichment Centre, so we are now looking to fundraise the remaining $10,000 to complete the construction. If you would like to contribute, please donate via our safe and secure Virgin Money Giving fundraising page.
If you would like to set up your own special fundraising event, then feel free to get in touch with us at contactus@reactproject.org and we will let everyone know what you are up to.
